Tandem Skydiving: How To Prepare

Welcome to the The Skydiving Company! If you’re reading this you’re thinking of jumping from a perfectly good airplane! Though your friends may question your sanity, we’re here to assure you that you’re getting ready to experience the adventure of a lifetime!

As with all things, the best enjoyment comes from preparation. Here are a few sure-fire ways to ensure you have the best experience possible.

1. Be Sober

This sounds a bit strange doesn’t it? Unfortunately, it’s not. Many of our guests get a little nervous about the thought of jumping from a plane and tend to overdo it the night before. This is a bad idea. Feeling hungover on a skydive is miserable. Furthermore, if you’re still a little inebriated, you’ll be turned away.

Our number one priority is safety for you and your instructor. Making a tandem skydive requires your input for a solid exit from the aircraft and a soft landing. A tandem skydive is more than a ride. You have a big role to play. So, be fresh and alert in order to experience life’s ultimate adventure!

2. Eat Normally

This may come as a surprise, but skydiving instructors don’t enjoy it when their guests vomit on them. This does happen from time to time and usually happens with those that haven’t eaten, overeaten from those that are dehydrated.

If you don’t want to be sick, be sure to eat a regular meal. Skipping a meal is not recommended. During the skydiving experience, your adrenaline levels will be surging off the charts which will lead to low blood sugar levels which will result in feeling nauseated.

It’s also not a good idea to overeat. Having the Grand Slam at Denny’s prior to your jump usually isn’t a good idea.

Aside from not eating or overeating, be sure to stay hydrated especially during the summer months.

3. Be Patient

Unfortunately, skydiving is dictated by a variable we can’t control: weather. Weather often causes delays, so we ask for your patience should your jump be delayed. The conditions we have to take into account are:

  • ground wind speeds
  • high altitude wind speeds
  • cloud cover
  • rain (jumping through rain is very painful)
  • fog

It’s best you don’t schedule an appointment too close to your jump time. Please allow up to five hours for your skydiving experience should we be hampered by weather.

4. Dress Appropriately

Comfort is key. Tee shirt and shorts with tennis shoes are ideal. Leave the boots and flip flops at home as they are less than ideal for skydiving. If it’s a cold day, be sure to wear layers as opposed to anything too bulky.

5. Book Early

Earlier is always better. During summer months, afternoon thunderstorms regularly occur and may require you to reschedule your jumps. Mornings are best as conditions are usually benign.

6. Relax

There’s a tendency to feel stressed (perfectly natural) but try to recognize it. Slow everything down and breath. Guests who are running late for their scheduled time often arrive at the skydiving center feeling extra-stressed. Allow ample time to travel to our center taking into consideration traffic. Skydiving is supposed to be about fun and adventure. The more stressed you feel, the less you’ll enjoy the experience.
